(May 7, 2007) BOERNE, TEXAS –
Members of The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch witnessed a
legendary round of golf today, as the Golden Bear played
18 holes to inaugurate the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf
Course. Cordillera Ranch, an 8,700-acre master-planned
residential community located in the Texas Hill Country,
welcomed more than 500 members and select guests for
this grand opening event. Nicklaus warmed up and played
the course from the “Bear” tees while discussing the
inspiration behind his Signature design and the strategy
of the layout.
“The course’s design came naturally
from the lay of the land and the elements that were
present on this site when we first tackled this project.
The property’s rolling hills and canyon walls produced a
great mix of holes that make the course challenging for
all levels of golfers,” Nicklaus said. “This is simply a
beautiful piece of property that we were fortunate to
come across and evolve into a spectacular course.”
The 7,464-yard, par-72 course, which
is the centerpiece of the Cordillera Ranch development,
takes full advantage of dramatic elevation changes that
occur throughout the property. Golfers experience
25-mile views of the Guadalupe River Valley as they play
along Zoysia fairways and immaculate Bentgrass greens.
Several holes play across and through the middle of
40-foot canyon walls, while six holes offer the strategy
and beauty of water cascading along the fairways.
Construction of the course concluded last summer, and
the course opened for limited play to members in June
2006.
In addition to the remarks from Jack
Nicklaus, today’s press conference featured David Hill,
president of Cordillera Ranch Development Corporation,
who discussed the decision to choose Nicklaus as the
course designer and the vision behind Cordillera Ranch.
“From the very beginning, we made a
conscious decision to make this a truly unique course by
preserving the native surroundings,” Hill said. “Mr.
Nicklaus was able to design a course using the
property’s natural attributes, which allowed us to
maintain the integrity of the land. By using the Hill
Country’s natural elements, we were able to create a
wonderful course that is not only great to look at but
enjoyable and challenging to play. If you ask me, this
course is simply unparalleled.”
There is arguably no name more
synonymous with greatness in the sport of golf than
Nicklaus. His competitive career spanned five decades,
which included more than 100 professional tournament
victories worldwide and a record 18 professional
championship titles. But Nicklaus’ legacy as the Golfer
of the Century is being rivaled by his reputation as one
of the world’s most sought-after course designers. His
design firm Nicklaus Design, the privately owned company
of the Nicklaus family, is considered the world leader
in golf course design, with 313 courses open for play in
30 countries and 38 states. Of those, Jack Nicklaus has
been involved in the design of 256 courses worldwide. At
least 52 Nicklaus Design courses have been ranked in
various national or international Top-100 lists, and
through 2006, at least 80 Nicklaus courses hosted a
combined total of more than 500 professional tournaments
worldwide or significant national amateur championships.
Nicklaus Design currently has courses under construction
or under development in 37 different countries. For
three years in a row, the Golden Bear has been named by
one publication as the “Most Powerful Person in Golf”
for his global impact on the game, primarily through his
design business.
The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf
Course is part of The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch, a
unique combination of seven resort-style clubs in one
location, including: The Social Club, The Tennis and
Swim Club, The Equestrian Club, The Rod and Gun Club,
The Spa and Athletic Club, The River Club and The Golf
Club. The diverse set of clubs allows members to enjoy
everything from tennis and a state-of-the-art spa and
athletic center to fishing, kayaking and horseback
riding, all just minutes from their front door.
Cordillera Ranch is an 8,700-acre
master-planned residential community located north of
San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. Cordillera Ranch
offers its residents on-site recreational opportunities
and boasts 1 to 10+-acre estates, including valley view,
golf course, Guadalupe River frontage and hilltop
homesites. Golf course homesites are nestled among
acreage estates and set far back from the course, hidden
by rolling hills, live oaks and native grasses, thus
preserving the integrity and natural beauty of the
course. Cordillera Ranch is being developed by
Cordillera Ranch Development Corporation, a subsidiary
of the Texas-based DH Investment Company.
