Homes 4 Wounded Heroes

Looking for some perspective on your life? Try this next time you have an ache or pain: David Hillary, one of the wounded warriors that played golf at Cordillera Ranch last week, has had 134 surgeries to repair injuries related to a double-stacked IED attack in the Middle East while serving our country. The blast shattered both femurs, broke 3 vertebrae in his back and sent shrapnel through his head. This hero didn’t have time to tell me the rest of his story because he had to hustle over to help his team make a putt in the Military Warriors Support Foundations Homes 4 Wounded Heroes Celebrity Golf Tournament. While the field included celebs like Roger Clemens, Ryan Palmer, Bruce Bowen, Sean Elliott, Max Lucado and many other VIP’s, it was the wounded warriors in the event that stole the show. Another warrior that is making his mark beyond the battlefield is Michael Campbell. Michael dreams of making the PGA Tour- and if you’ve seen him play, you’ll know it’s not a pipe dream. Michael jokingly admits he does have one advantage over other golfers because of his war wounds: he doesn’t remember his bad holes due to memory loss that resulted from the traumatic brain injury (TBI) caused by the IED blast he was in back in 2003 in Fallujah. He’s got real talent though – learn a little more about Michael on his web page at www.givehopethrugolf.com .

Aside from the opportunity to spend time with some of these amazing troops on the golf course, the highlight of the event was the home giveaway to John Hyland, photographed above with General Leroy Sisco, MWSF founder, and his two sons that were in attendance. John, a wounded warrior himself, was at the dinner party Sunday night under the assumption he was receiving a volunteer appreciation award, and he was shocked when General Leroy Sisco, the founder of MWSF, delivered the news that he would be receiving a mortgage-free home from MWSF. This foundation does so much for these wounded soldiers and their families and with the support of the community and so many generous sponsors, this inaugural event at Cordillera Ranch raised over $130,000 (net) that was contributed to MWSF. The support of the Cordillera Ranch community was outstanding; pictured above is Bernie Tosdevin singing the national anthem prior to the tournament. The most impressive part is that MWSF has the ability to give away at least 6 more homes with those funds, so this truly has a major impact on many families.
Thank you to all of the sponsors, celebrities and volunteers that supported this inaugural event at Cordillera Ranch.
